Gel vs. Acrylic vs. BioGel: Which Nail Extension Lasts Longest?

Sarang Nails & Beauty · · 6 min read

If you've ever stared at an extension menu wondering what the difference actually is, you're not alone — it's the question we answer most at the salon. The short version: acrylic is the toughest and most affordable, gels look the most natural, and BioGel and Gel X sit in between with a lighter, more flexible feel. Here's the longer version.

Acrylic (full set from $55)

Acrylic is the classic — a powder and liquid that hardens into a strong, rigid extension. It's the most durable option and the most budget-friendly, which makes it the go-to for long length and bold shapes. The trade-off is that it feels slightly thicker and firmer than gel, and removal takes a soak-off.

UV Gel & BioGel (full sets from $60–$65)

Gel extensions cure under UV light and have a glossier, more natural finish than acrylic. BioGel is a softer, more flexible gel that many clients find more comfortable and gentler on the natural nail. Gels are a great middle ground if you want strength without the firmness of acrylic.

Gel X & Poly Gel (full sets from $70)

Gel X uses a pre-shaped soft-gel tip bonded to your nail — lightweight, natural-looking, and quick to apply. Poly Gel combines the strength of acrylic with the flexibility of gel in a putty-like formula. Both are premium options for people who want a barely-there feel with real durability.

So which lasts longest?

  • Longest-wearing and strongest: acrylic — great for length and everyday toughness.
  • Best natural look with good durability: BioGel and Gel X.
  • Most flexible / lightest feel: Poly Gel and Gel X.
  • All of them last roughly two to three weeks before a refill, depending on your nail growth.

Refills vs. full sets

Most extensions don't need to be redone from scratch. A refill (from $45 for acrylic) fills in the regrowth at the base every two to three weeks and is cheaper than a new full set. Coming back on a regular cycle keeps your nails healthy and your cost down.
