Winter Nail Care in Toronto: How to Stop Dry, Broken Nails
Sarang Nails & Beauty · · 5 min read
Toronto winters are a test for your nails. Between cold air, dry indoor heat, and wool gloves that snag every edge, hands that looked healthy in September can arrive at March chipped, cracked, and peeling. The good news: winter nail care is mostly prevention. A few daily habits plus a monthly conditioning visit keep natural nails strong until spring. Here's what we tell clients at Sarang Nails & Beauty, right in the heart of Koreatown.
Why winter is the hardest season on nails
Cold air holds less moisture, and indoor heating dries things out even more — so nails and cuticles lose water fast and turn brittle, prone to splitting at the sides. It's the same reason your skin feels tight in January. Treat nails like skin, with a daily drop of oil and a little protection, and more than half the battle is won.
The winter routine that actually works
- Cuticle oil morning and night — a drop of jojoba per nail seals in moisture and keeps the nail flexible instead of brittle
- Gloves before a cold walk and before dishes or cleaning — detergent strips the natural oils nails need
- Shape with a fine-grit or glass file, one direction only — sawing back and forth creates the micro-cracks that turn into winter breaks
- Keep nails a touch shorter in winter — long tips snag on gloves and crack first
Gel can actually protect your nails
A little counterintuitive, but true: a few weeks of shellac can save fragile nails in winter. The gel acts as a shield — the flex and impact that would crack your natural nail hits the polish instead, so a weak spot grows out rather than snapping. A shellac manicure is $35 and lasts two to three weeks; a classic polish is $25 if you prefer changing shades weekly. Both include cuticle care and a hand massage that does real work in dry months.
Don't skip winter pedicures
Your feet live in boots for months, so it's easy to let a pedicure slide — but that's exactly when calluses and dry heels build up. A gel pedicure ($35–$70) hydrates, buffs, and keeps toes polished and smooth even under socks. Come every four to six weeks and spring sandal season won't be a scramble.
When to book a repair instead of waiting
If a nail has split down the side or is peeling in layers, don't wait for it to catch on something. A quick repair stop keeps the break from travelling and protects the rest of the nail. Our technicians — Chera, Mia, Vivian, and Nancy — will look things over and tell you honestly what your nails need, and what they don't.
